Subject: Compile Icon to Java VM?
Errors-To: icon-group-errors@cs.arizona.edu
Has anyone at the Icon Project thought about compiling Icon to
the byte-code for the Java virtual/abstract machine? Has
anything been written up about it? I'd like to know about
whether it is feasible, advantages and disadvantages, etc.
One advantage -- A compiled Icon application would run on
Actually, I don't have one yet (for my 486 PC running
Linux), but I'm betting that I will soon.
Java people claim that Java programs compiled to byte-code
can be translated to machine code for the processor on
which they are being executed. This sounds very
exciting. I thought, Wow! It would be neat if my Icon
programs could do that.
Doesn't this sound like a good idea for some U of A grad
student in Computer Science who is looking for a project?
I thought so.
